AG1 - 2017 JANUARY - UNIT 02

What do you think about marriage?
How should you choose the right person? Are there any principles?
What do you think about arranged marriages?

My partner says that marriage is nice and complicated. There is always trouble , for example , to pay bills.
The magic of marriage disappears when there are uncovered necessities.
Your mothers know the golden rules of Mr. Right.
It is a matter of good luck.

The girls say that they are  sure there is someone or maybe not who can come and become the right person. They want someone intelligent, generous, and good feelings especially commitment to respect the agreements.
There is always your soul mate out there wandering and expecting you to come about. You want someone intelligent, good looking, with good feelings.

Choosing the person you want to marry with is sometimes very difficult.
An arranged marriage is a marriage someone else arranges for you. You do not decide.

Which event is first? and which is second?

  1. I was listening to music when dad called.
1st: listening to music
2nd: my dad’s calling
  1. I was listening to music while/when dad was calling.

  1. I went out when Mary arrived. = I went out when Mary had arrived.
1st: Mary
2nd: I
  1. I went out after/as soon as Mary arrived. = I went out after/as soon as Mary had arrived.

2nd: I

Use past perfect without changing the meaning if possible.

1st: Mary
2nd: I
  1. Mary had arrived before I went out.
1st: Mary
2nd: I

Principle: apply past perfect for the first event, and you won’t change the meaning.
